Question 1: How much does the course cost?

Answer: The Novice Basic Rider Course (BRC) that is subsidized by the state of Washington is $125.00 eff 7/22/07 and for riders under the age of 18, the cost is $50.00. We also offer a regular price BRC with the cost being $205.00. The Experienced Rider Course (ERC) is $125.00. ERC discounts may also be available for groups or clubs.

Question 2: What is the difference between the regular price BRC and the subsidized BRC?

Answer: There is no difference between the two courses except the cost. The subsidized course is ($125.00) the Washington State Department of Licensing pays all of the tuition beyond the first $125.00.

Question 3: How do I qualify for the subsidized course?

Answer: Any person with a Washington state drivers license (Washington resident) or are in the military and stationed here in WA is qualified to take the subsidized BRC.

Question 4: What riding gear do I need to take the courses?

Answer: The follow equipment is required for both the ERC and the BRC.

  • DOT approved helmet (small supply is available)Eye protection (face shield, sunglasses, etc.)Sturdy over the ankle footwear. Focus on functional vice styleFull fingered leather gloves or motorcycle riding glovesLong sleeve shirt or jacket(ERC only) Motorcycle (in good working order & street legal)
  • Prepare for the weather (rain gear, sunglasses, drinks, snack, etc.)


Question 5: Will I still have to take a test to get my endorsement?

Answer: No, If you successfully complete the Basic Rider Course (BRC) or the Experienced Rider Course (ERC) and receive a completion card you will have 180 days following the completion date of your course to obtain your motorcycle endorsement. However you will still be required to pay the DOL fee to have the endorsement added to your license. To keep your endorsement at license renewal time you will also need to renew your endorsement each time.

Question 6: How long is the Course?

Answer: The Basic Rider Course (BRC) is 16 hours of instruction/riding broken down into 3 days.

Day 1: Evening 6pm to 10pm - classroom

Day 2: 7:30am to 530pm - riding until 12:30, 1 hour lunch, classroom until 530pm

Day 3: 7:30am to 530pm - riding until finished and then complete riding exam

The Experienced Rider Course (ERC) is 6 hours of instruction/riding completed in 1 day. Start time 8:00am.

Question 7: What if it rains will there still be class?

Answer: You betcha! The Rider Course will run rain or shine. Students are responsible for their own personal rain gear.

Question 8: If I am an experienced rider? Which Is the course for me?

Answer: We offer an Experienced Rider Course (ERC) for riders who already are riding on the road. Both the written and riding tests for a license endorsemnt are waived after completion of this course. The requirements to take this course are that you have at least 90 days of riding, 3000 miles of experience, be 18 years of age or older. Have your own motorcycle which will be safety inspected prior to class. The use of T-CLOCK inspection is used and unsafe motorcycles are determined by the instructor. Unsafe equipment will not be allowed. Proof of insurance must have liability $25,000 personal injury, $50,000 injury per occurrence, $10,000 property damage, proof of ownership and a minimum motorcycle permit or endorsement.

Question 9: Do I need a motorcycle to take the course?

Answer: No you do not. The Basic Rider Course (BRC) does not require you to own your own motorcycle. We will provide training motorcycles.

However, the Experienced Rider Course (ERC) does require that you have your own motorcycle and it is in well-maintained condition. Must be street legal and in compliance with all noise emissions to take the course.

Question 10: Do I need a motorcycle permit to take the course?

Answer: No you do not. However, if you are interested in getting a Motorcycle Instruction Permit to operate a motorcycle on the public roadways, you may start with a motorcycle instruction permit. The permit is valid for 90 days. To apply for the motorcycle permit, you must be atleast 16 years of age, have a Washington State drivers license and pass a written test on motorcycle operation. Question 11: Do I get my license after I complete the course?

Answer: Upon successfull completion of the Rider Course curriculum you will recieve your endorsement completion card. You may bring your completion card to any DMV Licensing Services Office (LSO) within 180 days, and the knowledge and skills test will be waived. You will then be issued your motorcycle license.

Question 12: What type of motorcycles will I be riding in the beginner course?

Answer: The types of motorcycles will vary over time but some of the bikes we use currently at North Sound Safety training sites are:

Question 13: I've never ridden before, which course is for me?

Answer: The Basic Rider Course (BRC) is designed for the student with little or no riding experience as well as those returning riders to learn the basic skills (both mental & physical) needed to ride safely.

Question 14: Where can I buy the riding gear that I need?

Answer: We recommend that you check out our sponsors. Each one of our sponsors carries a full line of protective gear and has knowledgeable staff that would be happy to assist you with your riding needs.

Question 15: Can I ride my own motorcycle during the beginner course?

Answer: No. This is not common and should not be expected.

Question 16: How do I sign up?

Answer: Check the schedule on this website for possible availabilities. Then call (360) 424-7136 to confirm class openings and sign up for the open slot. Once you have signed up by phone go to the Registration page and fill out our online registration form. Print out the registration form. Sign the waiver and mail both the waiver and the registration form with payment to the address shown on the form. Forms may also be faxed if you are paying by credit card. You will receive a confirmation letter prior to your class.

Question 17: Do you offer instruction on sidecars?

Answer: No. North Sound Safety does not offer sidecar courses.
